Low-level formatting of floppy disks. The low-level format of floppy disks (and early hard disks) is performed by the disk drive's controller. For a standard 1.44 MB floppy disk, low-level formatting normally writes 18 sectors of 512 bytes to each of 160 tracks (80 on each side) of the floppy disk, providing 1,474,560 bytes of storage on the disk. First, you cannot low-level format a SATA drive. What you can do is repartition them, replace an existing directory with a new, empty directory (known as a quick format,) or use a Zero Data format option that writes zeroes into every byte of the drive (known as a long format.) In the case of a quick format only the directory is erased.
Ssd erase utility. To low-level format a hard drive using Drive Setup, follow these steps:
- Start by selecting the hard drive you wish to low-level format.
- Under the Function menu select Initialization Options…
- Select Low Level Format (a check mark will appear) and click OK.
- Click Initialize at the bottom of the main screen.
- Again click Initialize.
Drive Setup will low-level format the drive and prepare it for use with the Mac OS, after which it can be loaded with software.
Linux Low Level Format Flash Drive
Note:
- Low-level formatting a hard drive will destroy all data on the drive and destroy any chance of data recovery. We suggest you make a reliable back up of all data before attempting this.
- Canceling a low-level format of a SCSI hard drive before it has completed can render the drive permanently inoperable.
- Low-level formatting can take several hours depending on the drive.

In the old days, before OS X, I used to use FWB 'Hard Disk Toolkit' to format my drives to insure I didn't lose any data to new and unflagged bad sectors on a drive.
But Disk Utility doesn't seem to have an old-fashioned 'format with verify' mode that will do what I want. At least not labeled in a manner which allows me to understand that it is going to do that.
Anyone have any inside knowledge on this subject?
